The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has challenged the party members to work towards winning the 2016 elections to “avenge the death” of the Upper East Regional chairman, Adam Mahama.

Speaking at the final funeral rites (ADUA) for the late Mahama, Nana Addo said the only way the late chairman’s death will not be in vain is to “rededicate ourselves to the struggle ahead; that is the struggle to redeem our country and return it to the path of prosperity and progress.”

When we have done this and put the smiles back on the face of all the poor and needy people that Adam took care of, only then that we would we truly “avenge his death.”

Adam Mahama was murdered through an acid attack a few weeks ago and has since been buried.

Three suspects including the brother of the NPP’s National Chairman, Paul Afoko are in the grips of the Police and are facing prosecution in court.

His death heightened tensions with the party and stops were taken to oust Paul Afoko and the General Secretary, Kwabena Agypeong for their alleged involvement in the circumstances leading to the murder.

Nana Addo, who has called for calm made a heartfelt appeal to every party members and sympathizer that “violence cannot and should not be the manner of resolving political dispute in our country.”

“The concept for an eye for an eye in dealing with wrongs will leave all of us blind…it is up to us to make sure that Adam did not die in vain,” he added.

He acknowledged that people are facing difficulty in coping with the pain and anger generated by the tragedy, adding that, “many of us cannot come to terms with the fact that the life of such a dynamic and charismatic young man has been cut short.”

“I understand this anger and I share the pain but I urge self restraint and I plead with you that all we do is treat the memory of Adam with dignity and reverence.”

The NPP leader asked the party wait patiently for the Police to do their work because so far, they appear to be “doing a good job and we expect them to continue and not be influenced in any way by political pressure of any sort.”
