GIBA kicks against new NCA directive to limit transmission reach

The Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA) is kicking against a new directive by the National Communications Authority (NCA) which would compel radio stations to reduce their reach of by half.
The new frequency re-classification regime would force radio stations at the next renewal date of their license to reduce their broadcasting reach from a 100-kilomtre radius to 45 kilometers.
NCA has explained that the re-classification of the frequencies will allow each station to operate within specified limits to avoid disruption of transmissions, and also give new frequencies to new areas that need them.
However, GIBA says the NCA did not consult its members before announcing the decision.
Vice President of the Association, Samuel Atta Mensah, told Joy News in an interview that the directive if implemented, will destroy their businesses.
He said the Association would not have had a problem with the directive had the NCA informed private broadcasters that they can only operate within a 45-kilometre radius before licenses were issued.
But without this information from the onset, according to Mr. Atta Mensah, it is inappropriate for the NCA to implement the re-classification directive.
