Dumsor

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) is demanding an immediate end to three-year power crisis.

The TUC’s Secretary General, Kofi Asamoah said government is taking too long to solve the crisis which has put the jobs of many Ghanaian workers at risk.

He told the President, John Mahama to provide the leadership that will lead the nation “out of this severe power crisis…it is taking too long to fix it…We are beginning to lose hope.”

Over 13,000 workers have been laid off and thousands more are expected to follow as the power crisis rages on.

Government has expressed concern over the massive job cuts but has given the assurance that it is putting in place effective measures to end the crisis.

It is also exploring other power sources such as solar and bio-septic tanks to produce electricity for consumption.

Addressing the 2015 May Day parade which was on the theme: “Addressing the energy crisis; the role of organized labour,” Mr. Asamoah indicated that the energy crisis is of prime concern to workers because “the untold effects on businesses are putting our job security at great risk.”

He mentioned that thousands of Ghanaian workers have lost their jobs due to the situation and many more are likely to suffer the same fate if the crisis persist.

The TUC boss acknowledged that the energy crisis “did not start from today, we know that you are not the only person who has created the energy crisis but the energy crisis is during your tenure.”

He attributed the crisis to the “long period of neglect spanning through several political tenures,” but nonetheless charged the President to “do everything possible to end the energy crisis. It must end now!”

“You have found yourself in the driver’s seat at a time when we are facing one of the severest since independence.”
