The Methodist Church of Ghana is desperately seeking for financial support to defray a gargantuan debt owed by its university.

The Methodist University College (MUC) is said to have contracted a bank loan of about GH¢1 million some two years ago but has defaulted in paying.

The amount is said to have accumulated huge interest over the years.

In its bid to save the school, the Methodist church has sent a distress call to its societies to contribute between GH¢2,000 and GH¢70,000 or more to help defray the debt.

According to Daily Graphic the superintendent ministers had been tasked to ensure that their congregations contribute their quota to settle the loan or risk being denied their salaries.

“The sources said the various churches had been given up to the end of the year to ‘cough’ out the levies.”

The newspaper on Tuesday reported that the announcement to that effect, was made on Easter Sunday adding that “the Dansoman Circuit alone, which is made up of about seven different societies, is expected to pay GH¢181,191 by the end of the year. “

“In the Dansoman Circuit, there are seven big societies and six smaller ones, described as nurseries.”

Meanwhile, some members of the church have express anger at the directive citing current economic hardship in the country.
